This is one of the most enjoyable books I've ever read. It's clever, witty, poignant, laugh-out-loud funny, horrifying, informative, and just plain wonderful.
The main character is a woman named Juliet, an author in post-World War II England. The whole story plays out through her letters to her publisher, her old friends, and her new friends from Guernsey, an island in the English Channel off the coast of Normandy. Through Juliet's letters--and the occasional telegram--we discover what life was like for the islanders during the German occupation and afterward as they began rebuilding their lives.
I started reading this book and could not put it down. The characters quickly became real people, and I couldn't wait to find out what happened next, how the friendships would develop. This is an intriguing story of despair, hope, love, friendship, discovery, and victory.
Make time to read this book!
Thanks! I am always looking for a good book to read.
ReplyDeleteWould Stephen like this, or is it girly? Ok, just between the 2 of us, and everyone else out there in bloggy world, he likes a good girly book. Ooo, that didn't sound too good, but you know what I mean!!! ~J
ReplyDeleteYou'll love it, D! Jenny, I think Stephen would find it funny and fascinating. I'm hoping Gene will read it at some point. I borrowed this copy from the library, but I like it so much I ordered my own copy (hardback) yesterday.
ReplyDeleteJust finished - was a wonderful read! Definitely helped pass the time spent waiting in the hospital!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you liked it, R! (I'm not sure why I called you "D" earlier. Sorry about that!) I had my son read it when he was studying WWII. He was less impressed that I was, but I stand by my original opinion: GREAT BOOK.
